Giddy-Up!

Our 1st Bike Ride!

I have so many fond and happy memories of the years spent with Corey.  One in particular was our bike rides.  Corey was 16 years old and finding it a little more difficult to complete the extra long walks down to the river.  Not wanting him to miss out on something he loved so much; I decided to get a bike basket.

Corey loved it from the very first ride! With a big smile on his face he would lean forward as far as he could to feel the wind on his face.   I have to admit he was a little bit of a show pony and did not mind the extra attention he got with passer byes pointing and cooing ‘Oh look at him, how cute is that’.

I will always miss those special times.

I started to look around for something that could accommodate both Amber and Indy.  Only a few days later I found the perfect thing, a dog bike trailer!   It was well loved by a couple of super cute Maltese dogs, but since their mum had recently purchased a new bike with a built in basket just for them, the bike trailer needed a new home.   I could not believe my luck!

I placed it in the backyard for a few days with treats inside, to encourage Amber and Indy to become familiar with this new contraption.  It did not take long before both of them were happily jumping in and out.

My intention was to start with short trips around the block until they gained confidence and extend the distance over time.  To my complete surprise they loved the trailer immediately!  They quickly learned how to handle the bumps; leaning into each other for balance around the bends, laying down during the boring flat spots, standing up and wagging their tails when something exiting caught their eye; all with a huge smile and tongue hanging out!

It was decided that a ride around the block was out of the question, let’s go to the river!

We stopped at regular intervals along the way, always picking nice shady spots to allow both to stretch their legs, toilet break, a few positive rewards and a drink of water before Amber and Indy would eagerly clamber back into the trailer for our next pit stop.  Indy was so excited to get on the road again he even attempted to jump back in when it was zipped closed.  Silly boy!

We had so much fun I am now looking for new routes and exciting destinations.  Do you have a favourite place you ride with your fur-baby?
