Bone Broth for Dogs

Recently I read an article by Dr Bruce Syme the founder of Vet’s All Natural about the benefits of offering dogs Bone Broth as a supplement when poured over their regular feed; or for an unwell or recuperating pet to help heal and build strength.  It is claimed that bone broth is great for joints as it is filled with glycosaminoglycans and collagens; for gut health as the gelatine found naturally within the bone helps protect the stomach lining and for sick dogs suffering from gastric illness or recovering and needs a nutritional boost.

Using Dr Syme’s recipe I thought I might have a go of making a batch of Bone Broth!

I was unable to get my hands on raw kangaroo tail; so I settled on a bag of raw marrow bone (check out Dr Symes other meat/bone alternatives in his bone broth recipe), a hand full of squash, a couple of zucchini’s and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (apparently this helps draw out the nutrients from the bone). The original recipe also includes Kale, Oregano and Parsley – though I didn’t have any.

Going by the directions I tossed all of the ingredients into a crock-pot; just covered them with water and let it simmer. I was not able to give it the 20-24 hours as recommend; mine simmered for around 14 hours.  Once done I removed all the bones and vegetables using a fine strainer (remember to throw away the cooked bones. NEVER feed cooked bones to your dog!).

It’s Simmer Time!

I chose to let mine cool overnight so I could scoop off the fat scum from the top before pouring the broth into little individual tubs and popping them all into the freezer.

Not My “Cup Of Tea”!

I am planning to offer the Bone Broth to Amber and Indy as a nutritional frozen treat on a hot day.

Thank you Dr Bruce Syme from Vets All Natural for sharing your Bone Broth for Dogs Recipe.
I am sure Amber and Indy are going to enjoy it!
