Ever wanted to own a cat? This post shares 10 compelling reasons for you to push through with your plans.

Have you ever wanted to own a cat, but for some reason haven’t pushed through with your plans? Maybe your spouse is against it. Or your children aren’t fond of cats.

But what if I tell you that there are many benefits of owning a cat? Well, aside from helping ensure that there are no mice running around your house, here are the top 10 reasons why you should be getting a cat now:

  1. You’ll get a great companion

This is one of the reasons why a lot of cat lovers like me take care of cats. Our feline friends are excellent companions despite their reputation of being independent animals. In fact, there are about 16 million more cat companions in the United States compared to dogs.

  1. Reducing risks of stroke and heart attack

Own a cat now and you will be up to 33% less likely to suffer from a stroke and heart attack.

This was the findings of a 2008 study conducted in the United States. The researchers said that taking care of a cat can relieve stress and anxiety, thereby reducing heart rate and lowering blood pressure.

  1. A better sleep

Believe it or not, having a cat at home would make you sleep more soundly at night.

This was the result of a poll conducted in the United Kingdom conducted in 2016. In the study involving 500 women and 500 men, more than 50 percent of female cat owners said they preferred to cuddle with their feline friends in bed.

Another study conducted by the Mayo Clinic Center also connected cats with better sleep. In the said study, 41 percent of the respondents said they sleep better because of their cats.

  1. You can cope with the loss of a loved one

You don’t want to lose someone dear like a parent or a friend, but we all go through such chapter at one point in our lives. If there’s any consolation, a cat can help you deal with such painful event.

Cats can serve a social support during hard times. Sure, your cat won’t console you. But you can talk to her to air your gripes. And I am sure your happy cat won’t judge you at all.

  1. Cat will be a good partner

Let’s say your partner left you because you insisted on owning a cat. Don’t worry because the chances are high that you will be able to get a new partner. Another British survey showed than 8 out of 10 women are attracted to guys who take care of pets.

More intriguing is the finding that 90 percent of single women who said that cat-owning guys are more interesting to them.

  1. You’ll have fewer allergies

If you have children, I suggest you own a cat now. Why? It can make them less susceptible to allergies. In 2002, a study by the National Institutes of Health showed that children who were exposed to cats were less likely to have allergies.

The researchers who conducted the study reasoned that pet exposure early in life can enhance a child’s immune system not only to pet allergy but other allergies. These include allergy to grass and dust mites.

  1. Easier to cope with stress

Another reason why you should seriously consider owning a cat is that it can help you cope with stress. Simply caring for a cat, or having her snuggle with you, will enable you to feel better. You will be less stressed when you have a cat in your place.

  1. You’ll feel better

Owning a cat can improve your mood. I know a lot of people who feel more relaxed whenever they spend time with their cats.

And this has a scientific basis. Spending time with a cat can increase your body’s secretion of the chemical serotonin which boosts feelings of well-being. It can also lower your cortisol levels which are due to stress.

  1. Reducing your carbon footprint

What does owning a cat have to do with your carbon footprint? Well, according to a study in 2009, it is more environment-friendly to own a cat than a dog. In the said study, it was shown that the resources required to feed a dog have the same carbon footprint as that of a Hummer.

On the other hand, cats have a carbon footprint comparable to a Volkswagen Golf. This is due to cats eating less than dogs.

  1. You’ll likely lead a longer life

With the number of health benefits you can get from owning a cat, it is not surprising that many ca owners actually live a long life. Not only are cat owners have a lower risk of heart diseases, they are also less stressed compared to those who don’t take care of cats.

Indeed, there are plenty of good reasons to own a cat now. Cats can provide you the companionship you’ve always wanted. Our feline friends can make you feel better. They will also help you sleep more soundly at night. And taking care of them can make you live longer.

Now, are you still having second thoughts owning a cat?
