I always felt that Amber needed a doggie friend, a little brother. She loved the company of dogs, from her familiar regulars to brand new dogs she has just made friends with. I also knew that although she would love a friend, she was very spoilt. I did worry how she would take to sharing all her toys, bedding and my affection. I did not want her to feel left out or think that she was no longer special to me; she is my little princess.
Sure the first couple of weeks after Indy joined us we did experience the usual teething problems. Amber was being very bossy and did get a little sooky, while Indy was trying to find his feet and learn his new place.
Two months on and how things have changed. Amber and Indy are pretty much inseparable and do everything together. When I look back at puppy photos of Amber, I am amazed at really just how similar they are. They are so alike in many of their traits, whilst they very much have their own unique individual personalities.
The one thing that has really stood out is how they genuinely appear to care and worry about each others welfare. Amber was due for her claws to be trimmed. This is not her favourite grooming moment and does tend to squeal a bit for the first few claws. I was surprised to see Indy circling us, whimpering and appeared worried. After the grooming job was complete, Amber was immediately greeted by a very concerned Indy who proceeded to comfortingly lick her face and sniff all over her body. Once fully examined and Amber was deemed o.k, they simply trotted off side by side.
If Amber cannot see Indy, she gets very concerned and will check everywhere for him, room to room until he is usually discovered sleeping in one of his many little nooks and cranny spots. Just to be sure he is in fact o.k Amber will quietly sneak over and gently sniff all over his face.
These lovely displays of affection happen all the time, which gives me great comfort knowing I made the right decision. Both Amber and Indy truly appear content and happy within each others company.
