Is there any better way to spend a weekend than in the company of good friends and our beloved pooches? Especially when the destination is reported to be one of Brisbane most “dog friendly places to visit”.
“Coochiemudlo Island” (affectionately known as “Coochie”) is located just 35km from Brisbane CBD. The only way onto Coochie is by the Amity Trader Ferry or Barge; located at the Victoria Point Jetty in Redlands, Moreton Bay. The trip takes just 10 minutes!
The island can be seen from the mainland and it appears much larger than its 5 square kilometres (you can walk around Coochie in 2 hours) and with a population of just over 700 residents; you are heading over to place that is truly peaceful and beautiful.
This was the first time both Amber and Indy have ever been on a barge! Indy loved it and was more than happy to be held right at the edge of the barge. Smelling and tasting the salt air as Coochie got closer and closer. Amber found the boat vibration and movement a little over whelming and preferred the safety of inside the car.
10 minutes later we were driving off the barge and onto Coochiemudlo Island! We scan the carpark looking for our good friend who lives on the island. Their she is waiving and signalling to follow her red scooter to the dog friendly cottage she arranged for the weekend! The cottage is super cute, comfortable and has everything you need for a relaxed island stay.
A stroll along Coochie beach at sunset is a must! We wandered down a couple of streets back to the jetty and then finally along the foreshore. The red rock is absolutely stunning!
Amber, Indy and their friends Tico and Jack love the sand in their paws. Jack is a true island dog and appeared to enjoy nothing more than to show his “city friends” how living the island life is really done! He raced up and down the beach; racing this way and that. Amber and Indy simply enjoyed trotting along; watching wide eyed as this crazy island dog performed amazing zoomies! Even teeny tiny Tico and his teeny tiny legs had no problem keeping up with the “bigger dogs”. Yep Amber and Indy look HUGE next to him!
We had a wonderful and relaxing time and have promised we will definitely be back again to play at Coochie!
If you decide to visit, remember this beautiful island is resent to some amazing wildlife and home to just over 700 residents who adore their island! Please be respectful, Coochie is not a “party island”. Keep Australia Pet Friendly and remember to pick up after your dog and to keep them on lead.
